"130+ years of steadily increasing war"
By Rob Winters - Published on Wednesday, 06 July 2011 19:36
"A new study shows that the number of conflicts between pairs of states rose steadily from 6 per year on average between 1870 and 1913 to 17 per year in the period of the two World Wars, 31 per year in the Cold War, and 36 per year in the 1990s.“The number of conflicts has been rising on a stable trend,” says Mark Harrison, professor of economics at the University of Warwick. “Because of two world wars, the pattern is obviously disturbed between 1914 and 1945 but remarkably, after 1945 the frequency of wars resumed its upward course on pretty much the same path as before 1913.”
One of the key drivers is the number of countries, which has risen dramatically—from 47 in 1870 to 187 in 2001."

"Boomers forcing up demand and cost of seniors residences"

"CALGARY - The eviction of residents from an assisted-living home in Calgary shows health care can't deal with a wave of new seniors looking for a place to live, says an Alberta union leader.Alberta Health Services is scrambling to find new homes for the 29 seniors because the owner of a Carewest-operated facility won't renew the lease.
"The company leasing the property to Carewest basically ended the lease so they can now engage in full-blown profiteering from services to seniors," Guy Smith, president of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees, said Tuesday."

Rankin recalls. "It was like, 'That's not the cake I ordered,' and, 'No, it's the other gown,' and I said to her, 'Is this a bad time? Should I come back later?' "
The bride may have been doing great things for her wedding, but she was sabotaging her own care -- and it was a really important visit, as she was newly pregnant."

"Canadian Cancer Society spends more on fundraising than research"
By Rob Winters - Published on Wednesday, 06 July 2011 06:04
"An Ontario cancer researcher is concerned that the Canadian Cancer Society has proportionally shifted funding away from research and is spending more of its dollars on fundraising and administration costs."Most scientists don’t realize that the budget has been going up and up, and donations have been growing, but the budget for research has been shrinking," said Brian Lichty, a researcher at McMaster University who is looking into treating cancer with viruses that kill tumours. "So they are surprised and disappointed when they find out that this is the case, and the trend."
CBC's Marketplace analyzed the Canadian Cancer Society’s financial reports dating back a dozen years. It discovered that each year, as the society raised more dollars, the proportion of money it spent on research dropped dramatically — from 40.3 per cent in 2000 to under 22 per cent in 2011."
