"Small Banks, Radical Vision"

By Rob Winters - Published on Wednesday, 22 June 2011 19:45

"William Spademan is a radical banker. In an era when Wall Street executives frequent talk shows to defend lavish bonuses “earned” through reckless speculation, Spademan has been working to create a new kind of bank that would empower communities instead of enriching a powerful few.

“If you give any community the ability to create and control money, [it] can decide for itself what to invest in … [and] what needs to be done,” Spademan says."

"Lyme disease find unlikely safe haven"

By Rob Winters - Published on Tuesday, 21 June 2011 20:20

"UC DAVIS (US) — By hiding out in the lymph nodes, the bacteria that cause Lyme disease are able to both provoke and elude immune responses in the animals they infect.

Published in the journal PLoS Biology, the findings involving mice may explain why some people experience repeated infections of Lyme disease.

“Our findings suggest for the first time that Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria that cause Lyme disease in people, dogs, and wildlife, have developed a novel strategy for subverting the immune response of the animals they infect,” says Nicole Baumgarth, associate professor of pathology, microbiology, and immunology at the University of California, Davis."

The U.S. economy, after all, is sinking and taking on an unprecedented volume of water (i.e. debt), yet virtually no one is willing to admit the obvious fact that this ship is sinking. And much like with the Titanic, most "experts" continue to claim the U.S. economy is unsinkable, despite the obvious evidence that we might want to start heading for the life rafts."

Poor quality food in nursing homes

By Rob Winters - Published on Monday, 20 June 2011 16:16

"Forty years ago I started my career as a chef, which included accredited training at Algonquin College in Ottawa, Ont. I have worked in hotel kitchens, restaurants, industrial remote camps and nursing homes.

After surgery a few weeks ago, I was discharged from hospital to an Edmonton rehabilitation centre for followup therapy.

Although the care staff, the rehab exercise routines and the actual physical nursing home facility were good, I was appalled at the food quality."
