"Lemon Lady Feeds The Hungry On Her Own Dime"

By Rob Winters - Published on Saturday, 25 June 2011 21:02

"Anna Chan's story is proof that one passing thought could have a lasting effect.

Less than three years ago, Anna found herself constantly searching for ways to calm her newborn daughter, Ava, who would often come down with intense bouts of colic.

"Ava would cry all the time," said Anna, who works part-time as an office manager." But I found out that she just loved her carseat."

"Butterfly wins evolutionary race"

By Rob Winters - Published on Saturday, 25 June 2011 20:48

"A butterfly found in Samoa has displayed the fastest known rate of evolution as a result of a dramatic "arms race" with a microscopic parasite that kills only males of the species.

Biologists have witnessed how the butterfly has fought back against the parasite by spreading a gene that confers resistance against a type of bacteria that kills male embryos before they hatch.

The scientists said the rapid spread of the gene is an example of the Red Queen principle of evolution......"

"Canada admits asbestos opponents are right"

By Rob Winters - Published on Saturday, 25 June 2011 12:49

"The Canadian delegation at an international summit admitted Thursday it agrees with the work of a United Nations scientific panel that wants limits placed on the export of chrysotile asbestos, but Canada still won't back the move.

The admission, made at a UN conference in Geneva to decide whether to label the known carcinogen mined in Quebec as hazardous, re-inforced a growing sentiment that domestic politics are behind Canada's entrenched position to block the listing of chrysotile asbestos as a hazardous material on Annex III of the UN's Rotterdam Convention."

It seems that Goldman Sachs Group Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co., Deutsche Bank AG, and others now want to help securitize “longevity risk” through a newly created derivatives market.

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

Here’s the deal: The banks want to collect billions in fees from pension funds and other institutions by issuing insurance that will manage the risks associated with living longer than the financial planners planned."

"Police to Use Facial Scanners to Identify Rioters"

By Rob Winters - Published on Thursday, 23 June 2011 16:27

"B.C.'s provincial insurer and police will use facial-recognition technology to help track down looters responsible for the millions in damage caused during last week's post-Stanley Cup riots. The province's privacy commissioner gave the OK to the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia to use the technology, which compares footage from hundreds of videos and photos taken during the riot with a police database to identify offenders. A handful of rioters have already apologized or turned themselves in, but relying on altruism and changes of heart is hardly a useful way to bring them to justice."
