"A York Regional police officer and father of two young children, speaking on his radio from under the crushing weight of an upturned minivan, remained stoic to the end Tuesday as his life was cut tragically short by a routine traffic stop gone horribly wrong.

The dying words of Const. Garrett Styles, who was able to call for help with his police radio, were captured moments after the bizarre tragedy began to unfold in the early hours on a rural highway north of Toronto."

"In recent decades, a number of blind people have developed a bat-like method of determining their surroundings using tongue clicks. Following recent success in Berlin, the technique could become more widespread in Germany. Some even use "flash sonar" to ride bikes and go hiking in the mountains.

Two-and-a-half-year-old Juli merrily twirls around, holding a small white cane in her outstretched arm. Every so often, she makes a discreet clicking sound with her tongue. Doing so allows her to see with her ears, her parents say. She just needs more practice."

"It would be hard for any parent to read about how a 15-year-old girl with Down syndrome ended up living for days beside the her dead mother’s body in a mobile home without coming close to tears.

The girl — and her mother — faced terrible adversity. The system of supports and child protection supposedly in place to prevent such a horrific outcome failed. And the failures came despite repeated warnings that its weaknesses were putting children and families at risk."

"Bell hit with $10-million penalty for tricking consumers"

"An increasingly assertive Competition Bureau has gone after the largest communications company in the country, forcing BCE Inc. to pay $10-million for misleading consumers in a case that could ripple beyond the sector.

The bureau alleged that since December, 2007, Bell has misrepresented to consumers the prices of some of its wireless, Internet, home phone and satellite TV services by tacking on hidden fees that make its advertised price impossible to obtain. Although Bell said it “fundamentally disagrees” with the bureau’s findings, it has agreed to pay the considerable sum and align its “non-compliant advertising,” as well as pay an additional $100,000 to cover the cost of the agency’s investigation."

The relationship between city life and mental illness

"City living appears to increase the activity in brain regions that are associated with mental illness, a new study has found.

Scientists from the Central Institute of Mental Health in Germany and McGill University in Canada, used functional magnetic imaging to assess the stress of city life.

Their results appear today in Nature.

We know that the risk of getting mental illness is higher for people living in cities, explains lead author Professor Andreas Meyer-Lindenberg."
