Inappropriate use of antibiotics for urinary tract infections

According to a recent nursing home study on the use of antibiotics for the treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs), doctors tend to over prescribe the drug with two out of every five residents receiving inappropriate medications.

Paramedics can now provide minor care in nursing homes

Halifax government is attempting to prevent overcrowding in hospital emergency rooms by assigning paramedics to provide “minor emergency” care to seniors across 15 nursing homes.

Seat belt kills nursing home resident

Fong Sue Louis, 77, died in a nursing home when she was attempting to escape the restraints of her wheelchair. Fong was placed in a wheelchair as a result of her declining health and low staffing levels.

Valleyhaven nursing home - poor track record

Chilliwack's Valleyhaven Nursing Home has the worst saftey ratings in Vancouver according to the Fraser Health Authority, the government agency responsible for ensuring nursing homes are in keeping with government regulations.

Do you remember the chaos that surrounded Y2K?  Time Magazine’s headline in January 2009 read: “The End of the World as We Know it?”  Newspapers told people to stock up on the essentials just in case.  While households purchased batteries and bottled water by the case; banks, government offices and retail chains chewed their fingernails on December 31, 1999, nervously awaiting the potential collapse.  Do you remember what happened on January 1, 2000?  Nothing.  That’s right.  The date came and went uneventfully.
