"Couple married 66 years may be split up"

"Sudbury’s Marjory and Paul Springer have been happily, devotedly, lovingly married for 66 years.After almost seven decades of marriage, they just want to be together in their final years.
Sadly, bizarre new regulations governing nursing homes that came into force last July make it tough — and costly — for that to happen.
First, it’s almost impossible to find a room for a married couple. No home in Sudbury could take them, so the family found their parents a room in Arthur, near Georgetown, close to one of their daughters.
But because they’d requested a shared room, the rules dictate that it’s a semi-private room — not the basic level."

Assisted suicide set to be legalised

"A Swiss region is poised to give old people in state-subsidised care homes the right to die via assisted suicide if that is their wish.The assisted suicide organisation Exit, which already helps terminally ill patients in a number of nursing homes, forced a poll on the issue in Vaud – a Swiss first - back in 2009 and garnered the required number of signatures to make it law.

"A St. John's woman is pleading with the provincial government to create more subsidized nursing home beds.
Michelle Abbott said her mother, 73-year-old Catherine Dinn, is in the advanced stages of Parkinson's disease and has a number of other health problems. Abbott said she's written to Eastern Health, Newfoundland and Labrador Health Minister Jerome Kennedy and both the former and current premiers.
She said her family's ordeal began five years ago."

"A Nebraska nursing home has taken the federal government to court in an effort to clear its record, claiming that investigators issued a sex abuse deficiency report after observing hand holding and hugging between two residents with dementia.

"Rolling his wheelchair down the hall after exercise class recently, Herman Kapla paused to assess the results of the vigorous new workout program at the St. Paul, Minn., nursing home where he lives.
“Oh, I don’t know. I’m pretty much the same,” the 98-year-old said. “Well, except I can stand up now.”
In 13 Minnesota nursing homes run by Duluth-based Benedictine Health System, nurses and aides are expressing amazement at changes they see in more than 650 residents who are stretching, standing, squatting and lifting weights in an experimental program designed to reduce dangerous falls."
