"App lets workers track wages; employers worry it will spark lawsuits"
By Rob Winters - Published on Sunday, 22 May 2011 19:14
"WASHINGTON - American workers who don't trust the boss to keep track of their wages can now do it themselves with a new smartphone application from the Department of Labour. But employers worry that the time sheet app, along with other new initiatives, could encourage even more wage and hour lawsuits.
The app, called DOL-Timesheet, lets workers calculate regular work hours, break time and overtime pay to create their own wage records. Department officials say the information could prove valuable in a dispute over pay or during a government investigation when an employer has failed to keep accurate records.
"This app will help empower workers to understand and stand up for their rights when employers have denied their hard-earned pay," Labour Secretary Hilda Solis said."

"Why Rich and Famous Men Stray"
By Rob Winters - Published on Sunday, 22 May 2011 19:07
"Why do so many rich and famous men stray?Could it be about being hooked on adrenaline, feeling entitled to the adoration and admiration of the masses, feeling unduly carped/nagged/criticized at home and then being seduced by power into developing secondary Asperger’s Syndrome?
Hooked on Adrenaline
What such people that are excitement junkies never bargained for or prepared for is the fact that the thrill of an adrenaline rush is exceeded by the anguish of an adrenaline crash. It is similar to the crash off

"Can You Be Too Cheerful?"
By Rob Winters - Published on Sunday, 22 May 2011 19:02
"On the way home from work the other day, I listened to an interesting NPR story about conspicuous conservation, a play on Thorstein Veblen's (1899) notion of conspicuous consumption. In case you need reminding, conspicuous consumption refers to over-the-top and blatant materialism undertaken to show others how well off you might be (even if you are not). In parallel, conspicuous conservation refers to over-the-top ecologically relevant actions undertaken to show others how green you might be (even if you are not). A definition of conspicuous conservation that I like is being frugal in high style. An example from the NPR story that stuck in my mind was people who put solar panels on the front of their house, not on the roof, because neighbors might not see them otherwise, even though the panels would do much more good on the roof where the sun would actually hit them."

"Sniffiing led to smarter mammals"
By Rob Winters - Published on Sunday, 22 May 2011 18:54
"An improved sense of smell jump-started brain evolution in the ancestral cousins of present-day mammals, according to paleontologists. The findings may help explain why mammals evolved such large and complex brains, which in some cases ballooned 10 times larger than relative body size.
By reconstructing fossils of two early Jurassic period mammals – Morganuocodon and Hadrocodium – researchers provide new evidence that the mammalian brain evolved in three major stages."

"Baby Boomers war against aging"
By Rob Winters - Published on Sunday, 22 May 2011 18:41
"CONCORD, N.C. -- Have you noticed lately? There are too many of them to count… “Baby Boomers.”Nearly 78 million of them can be found in this country, to be exact. This figure is not to be taken lightly, as it constitutes about one quarter of the nation’s total population.
Baby Boomers come in all sizes, shapes, colors and psychological make-ups. The one common characteristic among all members is that they were born between 1946 and 1964 - post World War II.
Who are they? “Baby Boomers” – often referred to as the S Generation or the Sandwich Generation -- play many important roles. Their present age range is from the mid-40s to the mid-60s. Besides the communality of age, many feel that Baby Boomers carry a host of other characteristics which distinguish them from their predecessors. Some of their traits include:"
