"Rogers to launch 24-hour Toronto news channel"
By Rob Winters - Published on Monday, 30 May 2011 19:13
"Rogers Media plans to launch a new local news channel in Toronto, to be called CityNews Channel, president Scott Moore announced Monday.
At the same time, the CTV network announced a rebranding of its A Channel services as the CTV Two network. That move will affect stations in Toronto, Ottawa, Barrie, London and Windsor, Ont., and Vancouver, Victoria and Atlantic Canada.
Both announcements were made Monday as the networks prepared to unveil their TV strategies for the coming year.
Rogers, which owns Citytv, Maclean's magazine and radio station 680 News, said it plans to draw on resources from those other holdings to fuel a 24-hour news channel with an interactive screen format. The digital cable channel will launch in October, Moore said in a news release."

"NDM-1 superbug appears to be first acquired within Canada"
By Rob Winters - Published on Monday, 30 May 2011 19:11
"TORONTO — Canadian researchers have identified what appears to be the first domestically acquired case of an NDM-1 superbug.
An 86-year-old Ontario man was found to be carrying bacteria resistant to most antibiotics because of NDM-1, or New Delhi metallo-1, an enzyme that alters the DNA of various types of bacteria. NDM-1 is endemic in India and Pakistan and has spread worldwide due to global travel.
But the patient, who was admitted to hospital and then a rehabilitation centre after suffering a stroke last October, had not travelled outside southwestern Ontario for the last decade. None of the man's family members or other close contacts were carrying the superbug, nor had any been to parts of the world where NDM-1 is widespread."

"Foreign farm workers, nannies and other temporary labourers in Canada are forming a united front to fight for better treatment by employers.
“What we are seeing now is a shift and expansion of the temporary foreign workers program from agriculture and live-in care to food industry, restaurants, hospitality and tourism,” said Sonia Singh of the Migrant Workers Alliance for Change, the coalition to be launched this week.
“We are seeing worsening work conditions for these workers. It sets a dangerous path to have our immigration policy based on temporary work.”
