By Rob Winters - Published on Monday, 26 September 2011 04:42
"YALE U. (US) — Scientists have discovered a new tick-borne disease that may be infecting humans in the U.S. and elsewhere.
The disease is caused by a spirochete bacterium called Borrelia miyamotoi—a distant relative to Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. The new bacterium, previously known only from ticks in Japan, was originally found in deer ticks in Connecticut in 2001, but it was not known if it also caused disease in humans."

"Ever wonder what fire is? Or what a flame looks like in microgravity?"
By Rob Winters - Published on Monday, 26 September 2011 04:33
"If you’ve got 90 seconds to spare the video above will explain what fire is. It’s an excellent watch, and one that might get you hooked on the Minute Physics YouTube channel. It might seem like the sort of question a child would ask, but “what is fire?” probably isn’t something you could answer so easily. Sure, there is the text book explanation, involving plasma and something about a chemical process with oxygen, but that’s probably not the explanation most people (definitely not a child) are looking for. The video is quite good at explaining fire in practical terms, or at least more practical than CH4 + 2 O2 → CO2 + 2 H2O + energy (an example of a chemical process for combustion)."

"Annoyed consumers have alternatives to Netflix"
By Rob Winters - Published on Monday, 26 September 2011 04:27
"If you're ticked off at Netflix (NFLX) because of its recent price hikes and service changes, the good news is you've got plenty of options for streaming video. The bad news is that none offers exactly what you get from Netflix.Netflix's streaming video service has won plenty of fans and subscribers in recent years. For a modest monthly price, consumers can choose from tens of thousands of videos they can watch instantly on their TVs, PCs, smartphones and tablets. Among recent additions are past episodes of the hit show "Mad Men."
But in July, Netflix announced a steep price hike. Then last week, the company revealed that, because it plans to separate its streaming video and DVD-by-mail businesses, customers of both will soon have to maintain separate accounts on distinct websites that will no longer be integrated."

"Falling Satellite Expected to Miss North America"
By Retire At Home - Published on Friday, 23 September 2011 08:12
"LOS ANGELES—While North America appears to be off the hook, scientists are attempting to pinpoint where and when a dead NASA climate satellite will fall to Earth on Friday. The six-ton, bus-size satellite is expected to break into more than a hundred pieces as it plunges through the atmosphere, most of it burning up.
The best guess so far is that the 20-year-old Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite will hit sometime Friday afternoon or early evening, Eastern time. The latest calculations indicate it won't be over the U.S., Canada and Mexico during that time."
