"Will grey hair be a thing of the past? Scientists discover protein that keeps colour in strands"

By Rob Winters - Published on Saturday, 18 June 2011 17:58

"Scientists have got to the root of grey hair – paving the way for locks that retain the lustre of their youth well into old age.

In a series of experiments, they have identified a protein called 'wnt' found to be vital to the production of colour in hairs.

The breakthrough raises the prospects of drugs, lotions or shampoos that raise levels of wnt – and restore white or grey hair to its natural colour."

"The Economics of Happiness"

By Rob Winters - Published on Friday, 17 June 2011 07:41

"“Lonely people have never been happy people. And globalization is creating a very lonely planet.” So says activist and author Vandana Shiva in The Economics of Happiness, an incisive documentary that links today’s global crises (climate change, terrorism, the financial crash) with personal malaise (rising levels of depression and the pervasive emptiness of consumer society). The cause? The macroeconomic structure of globalization, a massive conglomerate of megabanks, multinational corporations, and international financial institutions, all constantly expanding in a deregulated environment that takes profit, and never people, as the raison d’être of all things."

China Stem Cell News - Patients blogging about their experiences

By Rob Winters - Published on Friday, 17 June 2011 07:35

"Summer recently completed six weeks of adult stem cell therapy in Qingdao. Cody LeMaster, Summer's father, describes that nebulous term improvement as "things that she couldn't do before that she's able to do now." Stem cell patients often talk about these improvements they've seen in their condition. Summer's parents are both nurses back in the US. They know how to spot changes in a person's condition.

Summer and her family knew stem cell therapy was not a cure for cerebral palsy. Why would a patient want to undergo any treatment not offering a cure? Let Cody talk to you about changes in his daughter's hyper-tonicity observed during the treatment or described increased sensation in his daughter's legs. For Summer, the value might come down to being able to use both of her hands now in ways she never could have done before or just keeping her head up significantly longer when using her computer."

"Olive oil linked to huge decline in stroke risk"

By Rob Winters - Published on Thursday, 16 June 2011 07:08

"(CBS) Can olive oil keep you from having a stroke? A provocative new study from France suggests that it might.

The study - published in the June 11 issue of the journal Neurology - suggests that the olive oil has a "protective role" against stroke - at least in older people. Researchers tracked more than 7,000 people age 65 or older living in three French cities and found that that individuals who ate lots of the oil were a whopping 41 percent less likely to have a stroke than those who never ate olive oil."
