"Almost one in 10 Canadians poor"

By Rob Winters - Published on Wednesday, 15 June 2011 19:35

"OTTAWA - The recession stopped progress on poverty in its tracks and took a bite out of incomes in Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta, new numbers from Statistics Canada show.

In its first detailed, national picture of what happened to income in Canada during the recession, the agency says the low-income rate edged up in 2009 to 9.6 per cent — the second straight year that poverty increased after more than a decade of steady declines."

"Freedom, but at what price?"

By Rob Winters - Published on Tuesday, 14 June 2011 20:29

"The United States prizes freedom above all other civic values, but the concept is largely misunderstood by most Americans and is inconsistently applied.

Freedom from government interference is a key tenet of the free market system that the United States champions, but at the same time Americans expect vigorous government action in imprisoning criminals.

The result is a deep inconsistency—even as the United States preaches freedom in the marketplace, it maintains the world’s highest incarceration rate, says Bernard Harcourt, professor of law and criminology and professor of political science at the University of Chicago in a new book, The Illusion of Free Markets: Punishment and the Myth of Natural Order."

"Daily drinking, cannabis use, mental distress up in Ontario"

By Rob Winters - Published on Tuesday, 14 June 2011 20:12

"People in Canada's most populous province are drinking alcohol more often and smoking dope in larger proportions — and psychological distress is more widespread there, according to the latest data from a long-running study of Ontario residents.

These are findings from surveys conducted in 2009, the latest in a series of studies that have been performed since 1977 by the Toronto-based Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.

Robert Mann, the centre's senior scientist and lead investigator on the study, said it's unclear whether there is a relationship between trends seen in the use of alcohol and cannabis, and feelings of mental well-being."

"Pill to mend a broken heart developed by scientists"

By Rob Winters - Published on Tuesday, 14 June 2011 19:51

"British-based researchers claim they may be just a decade away from perfecting a way to persuade the heart to rejuvenate – a process thought to be impossible just five years ago.

That means that when a heart attack occurs, the muscles and blood vessels around the organ could rebuild themselves – massively reducing long term damage and improving the quality of life of the victim."

"Facebook usage drops in Britain and US"

By Rob Winters - Published on Monday, 13 June 2011 19:13

" The figures are being cited as sign that Facebook may have reached saturation point in the countries where it first enjoyed explosive growth.

Almost 6 million Americans abandoned the site in May, Inside Facebook said, based on Facebook’s own advertising tool. At the start of the month there were 155.2 million US users, compared to 149.4 million at the end, a drop of 3.7 per cent and the first time it has lost users month-on-month in the last year.

In Britain meanwhile Facebook lost more than 100,000 users. Norway and Russia registered similar slips."
