"Cancer discovery offers hope of tackling spread of disease"

By Rob Winters - Published on Tuesday, 16 August 2011 19:17

"Scientists have discovered how cancerous cells can "elbow" their way out of tumours, offering clues for new drugs to prevent cancers spreading.

They say they have identified a protein called JAK which helps cancerous cells generate the force needed to move.

Writing in Cancer Cell, they say the cells contract like muscle to force their way out and around the body."

"Sex appeal: Women kiss science goodbye"

By Rob Winters - Published on Tuesday, 16 August 2011 19:04

"When a woman’s goal is to be romantically desirable, she distances herself from academic majors and activities related to science, technology, engineering, and math.

"Every year, more than three million Canadians end up in an emergency room because of an injury.. These visits are often unnecessary as most of the injuries are preventable, and tend to happen at home where treatments are right at hand. “In many cases, seeing a professional for treatment isn’t necessary,” says Les Johnson, national director of training for St. John Ambulance in Ottawa. “And having the right tools at hand can help you look after someone who is hurt.”

Ready-made first-aid kits for your home, cottage or car are available from St. John Ambulance and the Canadian Red Cross."
