"Ukraine beer baths: the latest in alternative medicine"
By Rob Winters - Published on Saturday, 29 October 2011 10:22
"KONOPKIVKA, Ukraine — Here at the Medobory Sanatorium in western Ukraine, visitors come not only to take “the waters,” but also “the beer.”Not to drink, of course, but to bathe in.
Beer baths are just one of many unorthodox theraputic procedures offered by this no-frills, post-Soviet spa just 12 miles outside the regional center of Ternopol.
The former Soviet Union is a mecca for such off-beat healing methods.
That’s partly because the level of medicine in these countries often lags far behind that found in the West, so people turn instead to homeopathic and other unconventional remedies."

"LOS ROQUES, Venezuela —For the moment, Los Roques is a haven for luxury yachts for the super-rich, an exclusive archipelago of white sands and Curacao-colored waters. That may be about to change.
Earlier this month, President Hugo Chavez, always the socialist crusader, announced that he intended to seize those yachts and property on the islands —including the houses of some of Venezuela's wealthiest businessmen — and make use of the resources for state tourism."
"To please all consumers, please boomers"
By Rob Winters - Published on Saturday, 29 October 2011 10:02
"A few years ago a client at a major consumer products company discovered how to create packaging that could work for all ages."Delight boomers," was the secret they shared with us (psst, it's not a secret anymore — they've since told others about it).
They learned that boomers in their 50s or older were much more appreciative of packaging that could be easily read without their "cheaters," could be opened without a black belt in karate, and was generally easy to use. But having a functional package wasn't enough. Older boomers wanted designs that were strong, compelling and visually arresting. In other words, the form had to be outstanding, too.
This consumer products company found that designing packaging to appeal to twentysomethings didn't always delight older boomers. However, designing to delight boomers always resulted in packaging that also delighted younger consumers."
"MIT Tests Radar for US Soldiers to See Through Walls"
By Rob Winters - Published on Monday, 24 October 2011 21:04
"U.S. troops in combat don't know what might await them inside a building. That equation could soon change because of a radar system capable of seeing through walls and providing real-time video of what's happening. In recent tests, the radar showed humans moving behind solid concrete and cinder-block walls. Its developers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology envision it mounted on a military vehicle and providing video through walls as far as 60 feet (18 meters) away at a rate of 10.8 frames per second — far better than past radar technologies."

"Teen violence linked to heavy soda diet: study"
By Rob Winters - Published on Monday, 24 October 2011 20:39
"PARIS — Researchers in the United States said on Tuesday they had found a "shocking" association -- if only a statistical one -- between violence by teenagers and the amount of soda they drank.
High-school students in inner-city Boston who consumed more than five cans of non-diet, fizzy soft drinks every week were between nine and 15-percent likelier to engage in an aggressive act compared with counterparts who drank less.
"What we found was that there was a strong relationship between how many soft drinks that these inner-city kids consumed and how violent they were, not only in violence against peers but also violence in dating relationships, against siblings," said David Hemenway, a professor at the Harvard School of Public Health."
