"Singularity Summit: Quest for Immortality Never Dies"

By Rob Winters - Published on Sunday, 30 October 2011 21:27

"NEW YORK — Dreams of immortality inspired the fantastical tales of Greek historian Herodotus and Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon's legendary search for the fountain of youth. Nowadays, visionaries push for the technologies to transplant human brains into new bodies and download human consciousness into hologram-like avatars.

The latest science and schemes for achieving long life and the "singularity" moment of smarter-than-human intelligence came together at the Singularity Summit held here this past weekend (October 15-16). Some researchers explored cutting-edge, serious work about regenerating human body parts and defining the boundaries of consciousness in brain studies. Other speakers pushed visions of extending human existence in "Avatar"- style bodies — one initiative previously backed by action film star Steven Seagal — with fuzzier ideas about how to create such a world."

"Weird Metal Thefts in US Driven by Asian Industrial Boom"

By Rob Winters - Published on Sunday, 30 October 2011 21:22

"Consider a fire hydrant. To most people, it has the potential to save lives. Some see a more immediate gain: Its brass nuts can be twisted off and sold for a few cents at the nearest scrap metal shop.

Similarly, some view cemeteries not as sacred resting spots for the dead but as troves of bronze plaques and statues, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars and free for the taking. And the historic bell at St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco was just 2.7 tons of pure copper to the thieves who stole it from the churchyard last week.

Since the early 2000s, rapid industrialization in Asia and elsewhere has inflated the international demand for scrap metals. This in turn has driven up the metals' value, leading to another trend: More and more Americans seem to be seeing dollar signs where they used to see everyday metal objects."

"Touch and Tap: New Device Lets Users Use Anything as Touchscreen"

By Rob Winters - Published on Saturday, 29 October 2011 10:58

"A new device puts the world is at your fingertips, ready to be swiped, tapped and pinched as if it were a touchscreen. OmniTouch, a prototype developed by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and Microsoft Research, is extending the limits of handheld devices, making it possible to dial a phone number on the palm of your hand, take notes on a tabletop and digitally sketch on walls.

Typically, with mobile devices there is a trade-off between large screens and portability. But OmniTouch presents the best of both worlds, enabling users to run Android and iPhone programs on any surface imaginable."
