Why we love oppression

By Rob Winters - Published on Sunday, 01 May 2011 21:14

"Qaddafi is a sociopath, a man impervious to any sense of self-doubt. His kind are all too common in positions of power. Sociopathocracy-government by sociopath is so common, the argument that the war in Iraq was a priority because it got rid of one such sociopath makes little sense. Yes the world is better off without Saddam, but for every deposed tyrant there are dozens more. Supposedly three percent of males and one percent of females are sociopaths. Among leaders the percentage is much higher. It makes you wonder what puts them in power.

Information theory, the science that provides us such useful concepts as signal to noise ratio, gigabytes and bandwidth also provides insights into the prevalence of sociopathocracy. The key insight is in what's called redundancy."

"How Kate used her mood boards to choose her hairstyle"

By Rob Winters - Published on Saturday, 30 April 2011 21:23

"It was a secret as closely guarded as the bridal gown, but now the story behind the demi-chignon – the enchanting hairstyle sported by the Royal bride which drew such gasps of admiration in the Abbey – can be revealed.

The unique half-up, half-down style was created specially for Kate by her trusted personal hairdressers James Pryce and Richard Ward.

The elaborate demi-chignon – or half-bun – was the culmination of months of planning and practice.

It required the two men to begin arranging Kate’s hair at 6.30am on the day of the wedding in an operation of military precision to create the distinctive cascading tresses."

Province to raise nursing home costs

By Rob Winters - Published on Saturday, 30 April 2011 21:03

"FREDERICTON - The Liberal Opposition is accusing the government of covering up plans to scale back a long-term strategy to expand nursing homes across New Brunswick, while also raising the cost for residents.

The government announced higher nursing home fees on Thursday. Starting May 1, the province's 700 private residents will pay a maximum of $95 a day, up from the current $83 - a move condemned by the Liberal Opposition that dropped fees from $143 when they were in government.

Sue Stultz, the minster responsible for seniors, says the decision was difficult, but made necessary due to the province's fiscal challenges."

Province must stop evicting seniors

By Rob Winters - Published on Saturday, 30 April 2011 20:59

"A seniors rights group is asking the New Brunswick government to stop the practice of evicting seniors living in nursing care facilities.

The group said seniors can be evicted with 15 days notice and without cause, but it's a practice that's not allowed in other provinces.

The Department of Social Development is responsible for special care homes.

The department said an eviction notice is a last resort only given after trying to come to a compromise with a resident is unsuccessful."

"Nursing home workers harassed patients"

By Rob Winters - Published on Saturday, 30 April 2011 20:52

"TOPSFIELD — Four nursing assistants have been fired and two top administrators replaced at one of the state's top-rated nursing homes, in the wake of patient abuse allegations.

A report completed last month by state investigators alleged that at least a dozen residents of the Masconomet Healthcare Center in Topsfield were subjected to various forms of verbal abuse and humiliation — including one patient with dementia who was recorded on a cell-phone camera answering questions in a confused manner, to the amusement of a nursing assistant who then shared the video with coworkers."
