"eBeam Edge Whiteboard records text and illustrations in real-time as you write and draw"

By Rob Winters - Published on Tuesday, 04 October 2011 07:11

"Remember back in high school and college when you used to race to copy down all the things on the board your teacher was writing before it got erased? It was a rather stressful way to spend class, but times are changing. Educational tools are improving greatly with advancements in technology. It wasn’t until recently that students were able to get textbooks on e-readers and tablets, eliminating the heavy burden of carrying 40 pounds of textbooks around all day from class to class.

Another technological advancement will make following lectures and meetings even easier. The great minds over at Luidia, Inc. have created a device that will transform a normal whiteboard with text and illustrations into digital data in real-time."

"Why are the anti-Wall Street occupations growing?"

By Rob Winters - Published on Tuesday, 04 October 2011 07:07

"#OccupyWallStreet protests are now well into their second week, and they are increasingly capturing the public spotlight. This is because, whatever limitations their occupation has, the protesters have done many things right. I will admit that I was skeptical about the #OccupyWallStreet effort when it was getting started. My main concerns were the limited number of participants and the lack of coalition building. One of the things that was most exciting about the protests in Madison—and the global justice protests of old such as Seattle and A16—was that they brought together a wide range of constituencies, suggesting what a broad, inclusive progressive movement might look like. "OTTAWA — Federal scientists are reviewing the safety of a key ingredient in some anti-bacterial soap, hand sanitizers, toothpaste and deodorant.

In a briefing Monday, scientists working with the Chemicals Management Plan said they are studying triclosan and will produce a draft opinion on the chemical next spring, for public feedback.

Triclosan is an agent added to a growing number of liquid soaps, cosmetics, lotions, creams, household products and even toys as a way to kill bacteria.

But some environmental and health advocates fear the chemical may interfere with thyroid function, promote resistant strains of bacteria or create dangerous byproducts."

"Judge says the preservation of life is key"

By Rob Winters - Published on Friday, 30 September 2011 08:34

"On the face of it, the decision by a High Court judge in the case of M is no surprise - few would have expected a ruling to allow a patient with any level of consciousness and feeling to die.

But a closer inspection of the 76-page judgement shows that Mr Justice Baker did not find his decision a straightforward one."

"Brain learns while body snoozes"

By Rob Winters - Published on Friday, 30 September 2011 08:33

"MICHIGAN STATE (US) — An unconscious form of memory may keep people learning even while they sleep.

A new study finds people derive vastly different effects from this sleep memory ability, with some memories improving dramatically and others not at all.

“We speculate that we may be investigating a separate form of memory, distinct from traditional memory systems,” says Kimberly Fenn, assistant professor of psychology at Michigan State University."
