"Get married, drink wine to live longer"
By Rob Winters - Published on Friday, 21 October 2011 09:12
"Washington: If you want to live longer, keep your stress to a minimum, get married and have a glass of wine every night, new research says.
Researchers found that people who self-reported that they had good health tended to live longer. Moderate drinkers also lived longer than non-drinkers.
"Being a teetotaller and a smoker were risk factors for mortality," said Carolyn Aldwin, professor of human development and family sciences at Oregon State University, who led the study."

"Police uniforms include the hijab"
By Rob Winters - Published on Friday, 21 October 2011 09:02
"Whether it’s worn by a police officer, hockey player, usher, or soldier, surely the ostensible reason for donning a uniform is to have, well, uniformity. But things are changing in regard to uniforms at that ever-sensitive “service” formerly known as the Toronto police force.
Indeed, the police have announced they’re going to accommodate Muslim policewomen who want to wear the hijab on duty.
Some might hail such a move as another shining example of “reasonable accommodation”; others — count me among them — look upon this directive as another assault against Canadian traditions.
Yet again, a public institution appears to be bowing to the tyranny of political correctness — bending over backwards to accommodate certain individuals, some of whom are quite unaccommodating of western values.
The question arises: What’s driving this directive? Why is it important for the police to have hijab-wearing policewomen in the first place?
Contrary to widespread popular belief, the Qur’an doesn’t mandate Muslim women to wear the hijab."

"Corns and calluses and other foot problems"
By Rob Winters - Published on Thursday, 20 October 2011 09:24
"Thick and hard areas of skin (calluses) can appear anywhere on the feet where persistent rubbing or uneven pressure occurs. The most common places are the heel, the ball of the foot and the side of the toes, where flat feet, bunions or ill-fitting shoes may be responsible. As time goes by calluses may become cracked and painful or develop into corns.Corns come in two types:
- Soft corns appear between the toes because of unusual pressure
- Hard corns are found on the top or the end of the toes, or the soles of the feet and are caused by abnormal pressure
Corn plasters can sometimes help and two types are available over the counter in pharmacies - medicated and non-medicated."

"McDonalds brings local content to restaurants with own TV channel"
By Rob Winters - Published on Thursday, 20 October 2011 09:16
"In a move that should surprise no one, McDonald’s has announced that it is launching it own digital content channel for play inside of its fast food restaurants. It will be HD, and provided by two displays up to 46-inches in size per venue. The content on the McDonald’s Channel will range from local news based on the location of the store, as well as local sports scores, and specialized shows called “pods” that will focus on different people in the McDonald’s sphere of influence. As a customer eats they will be treated to vignettes about mom’s who work at McDonald’s, athletes who are sponsored by McDonald’s, along with advertising for the different foods the chain produces.
Really, this make sense since customers that are eating inside the store are a captive audience looking for something to do as they chew or wait in line. McDonald’s has undergone a major overhaul in many stores to make the chain look like a “cafe” setting, which ties directly into this new TV channel launch."
