Old Age Security

Old Age Security (OAS) is a modest pension provided by the federal government to individuals 65 and older. To qualify for OAS you must:

  • be a Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident of Canada
  • have lived in Canada at least 10 years after the age of 18
  • If you don’t live in Canada and you are a Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident of Canada before the date you left Canada, and have lived in Canada for a minimum of 20 years after age 18, you could be eligible.
For low-income earners, you may be eligible for other benefits at an earlier age. Individuals who are 65 and over can receive OAS even if they are still employed, however, you must apply to receive the pension. OAS is not tax exempt.
